A Mt Eden Fairy Tale

The Story of 16A Ngauruhoe Street

Stepping onto the grounds of 16A Ngauruhoe Street feels a little like wandering into a fairy tale. Protected by the sprawling, dappled canopies of century-old Puriri trees and framed by beautiful, hand-laid rock walls, the property possesses an immediate sense of magic. The air is filled with abundant birdlife, and a profound peacefulness washes over you, a serene sanctuary that feels miles away from the city, despite being just a short stroll from the vibrant heart of Mt Eden Village.

This enchanting atmosphere has been over a century in the making, rooted deeply in the history of old Auckland.

A Legacy Woven into the Village

The story of this land begins in 1898, when it was part of Samuel Prince's Estate subdivision. Originally named Gordon Road (likely in honor of Sir Arthur Hamilton Gordon, a former Governor of New Zealand), the street was later renamed Ngauruhoe Street to reflect the area's volcanic heritage. From its earliest days, this enclave was a cornerstone of the community, sitting just across from the historic Methodist Church and a stone's throw from what was once Ambury English & Co's 1904 dairy, the very spot where locals now gather at Circus Circus Café.

The original homestead at number 16 has served the community beautifully for over a hundred years, transitioning from a grand home to a day nursery, a hostel, and eventually a school. But the story of 16A is uniquely personal, it is the story of a father's gift.

A Masterpiece for a Daughter

In 1926, prominent Auckland businessman John Rendell commissioned the home at 16A Ngauruhoe Street. Rendell was a beloved local figure, widely known for establishing the iconic Rendells Ltd department store on Karangahape Road. A true gentleman of the era, he was known to walk from his Mt Eden home all the way to his Karangahape Road store each day.

Rendell commissioned this magnificent Arts & Crafts residence for one of his seven daughters. It is believed to have been designed by the renowned architect William Henry Gummer, one of Auckland's most celebrated residential architects of the time. Gummer had actually trained under the architect who designed Rendell's flagship three-storey store, tying the family's business success beautifully to their private sanctuary.

At the same time, a sister home was commissioned at 18 Grange Road as part of the wider family estate. Today, you can still see the original low stone wall and driveway alignments connecting the two properties, a quiet, physical reminder of a deeply connected family.

Music, Warmth, and Spectacular Sunsets

Under the Rendell family's care, 16A Ngauruhoe Street was a home filled with life. Mr. Rendell was deeply involved in the Mt Eden community, and this home was a hub of hospitality. Its walls regularly echoed with the sounds of family gatherings, church musical evenings, and piano recitals. It was a place designed for connection, warmth, and celebration.

Today, that same spirit of warmth remains perfectly intact, but it is elevated by the home's spectacular positioning. Moving into the modern heart of the home, the kitchen and living areas, you are met with breathtaking, uninterrupted western views. Your daily backdrop stretches out toward the Waitakere Ranges and the Manukau Heads. As the day ends, these rooms become a front-row seat to spectacular evening sunsets, painting the sky in vibrant colors over the rugged landscape.

Properties like 16A Ngauruhoe Street belong to a very rare category of Auckland real estate. With its architectural pedigree, historical provenance, exceptional multi-generational scale, and a tightly held position on the edge of one of Auckland's most admired urban villages, it is not merely a home. It is a genuine legacy, and its next beautiful chapter is ready to be written.
